Many people don’t know about our Wrestling Program, but those who do, absolutely love it. Before the season started, returning wrestlers went around school to ask people to join and gave cookies to students who wanted to sign up.

This allowed for the amount of people doing wrestling this year to greatly increase as efforts by veteran members proved helpful.

In addition to going to matches, the wrestlers enjoy going to practice because of the fun games they play. At the beginning of each practice, they play handball on their knees and are allowed to wrestle their opponents for the ball. “This game is always provides energy for the entire team because of how competitive we are when playing.” said Jonathan M. (8). After the game, they usually practice specific wrestling moves, and have practice matches.

Jonathan M. (8) is being pinned down by his fellow teammate.

The team also has a great and experienced coach, Chris H., who teaches at the high school. Calvin C, a three year wrestler said, “Our coach is amazing, he teaches us a lot of moves, so we can destroy our opponents.”

Justin L. (7) learns how to counter the move when someone is on top of him.

Many people believe that wrestling is only for big, strong people but many students are proving them wrong because you can learn to wrestle if you are small and still win matches. Many people become stronger after joining the team such as student Justin L. (7) who says, “Before starting wrestling I was like scrawny and weak but now I’m tougher and stronger”. There are different weight classes, which means a wrestler would only wrestle people in their weight class to make sure the playing level is fair.
