There’s an App for That

Most studies show that middle school students spend nearly six hours online per day. However, some of the Tigers we interviewed only spend about an hour online, on an average school night.
There have been many new apps that have come out this school year that have become popular. A lot of students bond over phone games like Clash Royale and Fun Run. Speaking of Fun Run, Lauryn N. (8) says “I like Fun Run because I can challenge my friends and compete against them.” However, James L. (7) says that he likes the game Stampede. He explains it as a game “where you ride on an animal and you have a certain time limit, and then you have to switch to another animal.”

In recent years, social media has become a popular way for teens to connect with others. Among the most popular ones are Instagram and Snapchat. However, Angela M. (8) said that she liked the new social media app, Houseparty. Her thought on the group facetiming app is that it is “an app that got popular, then after a while stopped.” We also asked students why they think Instagram is such a favored social media for middle schoolers. Summer S. (8) says “Because you can see what other people are doing, [and] stay caught up with your friends.” Similar answers came up when we asked students why they wanted to start a social media profile. Jonathan M. (8) said “To keep in touch with other people.”
Because Instagram is the most popular social media with Snapchat following close behind, we decided to find out what the students at our school thought. We were surprised to find out that sixth grader Sky P. says that he preferred “Snapchat because it’s easier to directly talk to friends and it [the text] disappears.”
As we continued to ask this question to different students, we found that there was actually a tie in preference. Our last two questions had to do with whether social media caused or solved any problems in the interviewers’ daily lives. We got a variety of
answers, from causing distractions and being time-consuming, to being updated on the news and helping some students feel more included. Social media is a great way to get out there and express yourself!
